Autumn Rain

Abyrne Mostyn has joined us again with a short  romantic offering that suits the season well. Fate is a fickle mynx, and uses  all means in conspiracy against us.

Autumn Rain

Only the weeping willow remained unchanged. The other colorful leaves, long since path pavers on the walk, betrayed the lateness of the season. Skylar was down there with the fallen rainbow along the curb feeling cast off and walked on. Shareese had been the cause. Weeks had become months since they had had anything more than an argument between them and still he could not bring himself to believe there was anyone else for him.
Love was like that. Loss was like that too. The difference was perspective and a healthy dose of reality, but he could not bring himself to choke down the bitter pill. She was off somewhere dancing with someone else, without a thought for him. He didn’t think so, he knew so having seen her in the pub window bedecked and bedazzled for the night. It was one more slap to the cheek he had already turned.
Walking around with his eyes on the ground, he missed what was in front of him, then and now. Realities past and future were lost to the drek that balanced on the sewer grate waiting to fall. He wasn’t alone. Megan missed missing the collision with Skylar just as surely as neither looked up to see the oncoming person in their path. Misery, company, cliché.
The mad tangle of limbs, the hasty apologies, and the recognition of a kindred soul were the matter of a moments glance up after the fall. The universe is a conspiracy. Sometimes only to show you what it is that you need to see when you refuse to look.
Silent seconds passed into minutes and more measurable units of time as they grappled with the notion that somehow words weren’t necessary yet to convey the gaping hole they were wearing under their clothes. Like running a wet finger around the rim of a crystal glass the monotone soliloquy of each played between them with the sounds of a concert orchestra to accompany the pain they wore on their faces. Before they realized the leaves no longer crunched beneath their feet, or that the November rain would wash away the somber death knell they had been building, the moment was broken and the tiniest piece of patch snuck from the edge of each hole toward their center with the laughter that followed their awkward ‘Hi’ as they uttered at them at the same time.
The universe is a conspiracy. Walk with your eyes open, stand in the rain, and see the future for what it can be. They did.

Oral Dilemma: Etched

Storytime Trysts does not own copyrights to this image.

When we last left off with Roxy, she'd just found out that  her fiance' Luke had been killed. This  terrible news came the day her mother was buried, and on the heels of a fallout with her  father. There are times in life that seem overwhelming, like we can't possibly bear another thing. Yet, we go on. Sometimes  it leaves scars, other  times the scars are internal.
The human condition  leaves us at the mercy of our emotions at times.

Tara clung to the steering wheel terrified. I hated to do this to her. I wanted to tell her but I could barely manage breath between sobs. I clutched my stomach as I turned to the window, staring blankly out into the night. Trees sped by, I imagined every one to be a part of my life slipping away.
I began seeing bits of my life on each tree. Devon Miller taking Casey Reynolds to a dance. Devon taking Phoebe Yates to the party where I met Chad. Chad using me, lying to me and spreading videos of me doing slutty things that I thought were private. Summers lost in a factory. Training for long hours with Keith. Finding out Chad was cheating on me. Devon leaving for the military. Devon disapproving of my MMA fighting.
We crossed the river - serene water.  Childhood memories, meeting Luke, training with Luke.
Forested scenery again: Mom. Fight with dad. Dad never there. Luke.
“ Tara, stop the car.” The tears continued but I realized my sister was all I had left in this world and I was being horrible to her.
“ Are you going to be sick?” She asked not turning her head.
“ No, well maybe. Just pull in up here and can you get us a soda or something then we’ll talk.” My lips trembled as I tried to quell the tears. “And get some extra napkins please?”
“ Sure Roxy” She sniffled. It broke my heart even more. While I waited for her to return I thought about what I would say, and how I would say it. Sooner than I expected she was back with two big bags of food and drinks.
She shrugged. “I was hungry”.
“ That’s ok, so am I.” I wasn’t really, but I hadn’t eaten for the past, well it was going on 4 days now. We sat in the car, and ate quietly. Well Tara ate, I picked at mine. I waited until I thought I could begin without crying uncontrollably again.
“Tara, I’m sorry. I’m sorry for yelling at you back there, for screaming at you the way I did. I know this has been hard for you as well. Losing mom and then the deal with dad and Tammy, well I've been really selfish. You’re all I’ve got now, and I don’t want to lose you.”
“What are you talking about Roxy? You’ve got Luke. At least you have a boyfriend. Tony broke up with me two weeks ago.”
I didn’t know. I hadn’t asked. I didn’t even know his name was Tony. I was a horrible sister. I bit my lip. “I didn’t know sis, I’m sorry.”
I sighed, taking a sip of the soda before I went on.
“No, Luke is gone. His funeral is tomorrow. I know you have classes, so you don’t have to go or anything but.” I had to stop, speaking the words out loud stirred up every raw emotion I felt.
“Oh my God! Roxy.” She leaned over and pulled me into a hug. I couldn’t help it, the sobs began again. Uncontrollable chest heaving sobs that wracked my body. She held me close for a long time and just let me cry it out. When I finally pulled back and wiped my eyes, two guys in a car alongside us were gawking.
By the crude gestures they made to us they thought we were making out or something. Tara rolled down the window and told them to “Fuck off assholes, my sister’s fiancee was just killed you morons.”
I chuckled at her frankness. I thought she was so clean cut and innocent, and it was the first time I’d ever heard her use any profanity. My nose red and swollen, with red puffy eyes I smiled at my sister. “We have each other, we’ll get through this.”
I turned in my seat, and took a bite of my burger. It actually tasted good to me. In no time at all I’d eaten the whole thing and scarfed down the fries. “I know this is terrible, but I could eat another one. I’m starved.”
“Yeah, we haven’t eaten much the past few days, have we?” She scrunched up her burger wrapper and tossed it in the bag. You want me to swing around the drive through and grab you another one?”
“Yes! That would be great. And a chocolate shake.” I licked the greasy salt off my fingers.
We’d get through this. I had to for her and I knew she was there for me.
Tara decided to go with me to the funeral. I’m glad, I’m not sure I could have driven. I sat beside his mother, she reached and held my hand while the minister gave the eulogy. The tears flowed and on my right side, Tara held my other hand, squeezing.
It was a closed casket funeral, I never really got to say goodbye. He was just ripped from my life and gone. His little sister ran up to me at the cemetery and hugged my legs crying. I knelt hugging her close. I was invited to join them for the holidays and I reassured her I’d see her again. We didn’t attend the wake, Tara and I drove back to my apartment. Well, to our apartment, that had been Luke’s apartment.
I walked in, it smelled like Luke. I went to the bed and collapsed on it, curled up as the tears flowed silently clutching his pillow and favorite shirt. At some point I’d removed my dress, and put on his shirt, and then his drawstring shorts. Several days had passed and I woke to the realization that I couldn’t smell him anymore.
I was frantic. I opened the drawer and took out another shirt, it was clean laundry not Luke. I searched until I found his jacket, slipping it on over the tee as I lay back down on the bed. I vaguely recalled Tara bringing me food, or urging me to shower. I didn’t go to class, didn’t go out, didn’t go to the gym. I couldn’t manage to leave that room.
There was some part of me that knew that if I did he’d be gone forever, and the rational part of me knew he already was. Grief is a strange bird, it makes you do illogical things.
At one point Tara came in to gather soup bowls, and glasses and stopped. She crossed her arms over her chest and scowled at me. “Roxy get up off that bed and go shower. You stink. You look like hell and I’m not waiting on you any more. You said we were here for each other and we’d get through. I need you and you’re not here for me. ”
I didn’t care. I did however make my way to the bathroom and tried to pee. I looked down at myself, creases of wrinkly loose skin hung on my frame. I stared into the mirror and what stared back wasn't me. Was it? In those few days I had aged thirty years or more, sagging skin, sunken eyes, matted hair. In those days I had lost myself, my grief consuming me like a living thing,  like a parasite eating my life away.
Tara was right, I looked like hell. She was also right in that I wasn’t there for her. I’d been so absorbed in my own grief I’d given up on myself. I no longer cared about myself but I had a reason to go on; to amend the wrongs against my sister. It wasn’t much but it gave me a purpose.

The Poetry of Danny Kemp!

Well,  we had quite a bit of stir over our little blog here yesterday.  It seems someone took exception to the type of material we post.  How ridiculous!  It clearly states on the preceding page before you get here  that it is not suitable for anyone under 18.   Oh, the  lack of understanding in the ignorant.

Our usual featured author is away for some rather important business.  Ben is turning in his Master's thesis; a huge accomplishment that not many even dare to tackle.
KUDOS BEN! WE ARE PROUD OF YOU!

In his absense, another gentleman from the UK has  shared some of his poetry with us.  Please welcome wordsmith Danny Kemp!

 I Am Me.

Don’t label with a name,
Don’t label me by colour,
I am me,
I am no other.

Don’t foster on me your bigotry,
Nor peddle me your deception.
I’ll live my life as it pleases me.
Through my own perception.

My life has been surrounded,
by sycophants like you
With words full of nothingness
Thinking they will do.

Never can you fill my mind
With hatred and detestation.
I will live it in my way,
With steadfast determination.

Take your petty criticism and
Take away your disdain.
Live your life removed from me,
As I quickly forget your name.

Love Of Life.
A laugh is infectious.
A tear, shed alone.
A love never offered.
Is a fear never shown.

Passion can be passing.
Love can last forever.
Life can fall apart, but can
Love can bind it together?

To seek but never find.
To look but never see.
To want but never have,
that love that can never be.

To rise from the broken.
To love someone new.
To taste what’s forgotten.
Is to find the real you.

Take this heart from my body
Lay my soul bare.
Take every thought that I have.
Treat my love with care.

My heart is now dead
but my soul lives on.
I was a man once
Now that life has gone.

Reality Or Not?
Indifference built the walls, that locked creativity in.
Self-interest added the wire, that compounded that sin.
Expression was apprehended as complacency swallowed the keys
There was no public trial, and no-one listened to the pleas.
Innocence was the next to fall, trampled and crushed.
As to the deviance of wickedness all had rushed.
Greed played its hand, and what a hand it held.
Untiringly inviting, ‘til all felt compelled.

Step forward compassion, with the purest of heart. “Where do we begin,” it said? “Where do we start?
The battles have been lost that’s true, but the war is yet to end. We must stand together as one and this world we must defend.
This world existed before us, and will survive beyond our years. Hide away your diffidence and shed no more tears.
Creativity will be our sword, expression our eloquent speech, And innocence, it will be you, that bursts through the breach.
That which those four bearers of evil, has bestowed upon us all. Is now ended, and this will be our rallying call.
We must conquer and divide. We must succeed this day. That is my pledge of allegiance I offer to God to whom I pray.”
Hope was recalled, where deep in memory it lie. It joined the side of righteousness and raised its banner high.
The skirmish was uneven, as conscience won the day. The forces of evil were vanquished and sent far, far away.

Suddenly I awoke, as the day shone into my room. It was a dream you see, and I was engulfed, in the unchanged GLOOM.

Along The Way.
“I am heavy, I am tired” said the old man to the child.
“My life, is drawing to an end. It is not what I have done to life that has brought me here today, but what life has done to me along the way.

I was strong, I was fierce, I took no-one to my side, simply brushing them aside with no need of them. Now I find that I’m alone, but don’t pity nor disown those memories that I’ve sown, along the way.

My path was never straight, sometimes narrow, sometimes wide but along it I did stride to find you here. And I am pleased that I did, otherwise you would never know what I managed in my life, along the way.

I have reached that final bend, the one that leads me to my end, and now I leave you here to make your own way through this life. Tread your path with care, and always be aware that there is no such thing in life, as a mistake.”

Thank you Danny, for sharing your heart and your masterful ability in poetry with us!

A Bio.....

Let me first confess something to you, I'm vain and like talking about myself. Usually I'm surrounded by people who only want to speak about themselves. I call them selfish and myself; misunderstood.

I will not bore you with my likes and dislikes, there are far more interesting people out there where you can measure your own against theirs. Instead, I will give you an example of what influenced my life. Just past my seventeenth birthday my Father died suddenly leaving me, his only child, and my Mother, who was verging on blindness. I was studying to be a Chartered Accountant, having changed my aspirations, from becoming a Helicopter pilot, on getting my 'O' level results from Shooters Hill Grammar School. I was a disappointment to both parents, having concentrated more on becoming a competent cricketer and the best open side wing forward never to play rugby for England than on my academic studies. Anyway, there I was on my way to the office when, without rhyme nor reason, I signed up to become a Police Cadet.

At the age of nineteen I was an up and running Police Constable, and here comes the thing. One day, whilst on duty, I found an eight year old boy who had been reported as missing from his home. Dutifully I returned him there to be greeted by a thankful Mother and a contemptuous Father sitting next to a roaring fire, stoking it with a steel poker.
When I saw the fear in his sons' eyes I knew immediately what had caused the inch wide festering wound on the boys face. I'll let you imagine what injuries I wanted to inflict on that man, but I didn't; and I've been ashamed of myself ever since.

I had a short career in the 'Job,' but no less eventful. I was the first to arrive at three deaths. One a sudden natural death, one a very 'bloody' suicide and one, where a jealous soldier shot his wife full in the face with both barrels of a 12 bore shotgun. All three were horrific and disturbing, but nothing has haunted me as much as that eight year old wounded child. I wonder if he ever lived long enough to extract revenge on his Father. I guess, in the age that we all live, I shouldn't say that, should I?

Why I started to write.
I was at work ( I am a London Licensed Taxi Driver) one sunny November day in 2006, minding my own business, stopped at a red traffic light when a van, driven incompetently, smashed into me. I was taken to Hospital and kept in for while, but it was not physical injuries that I suffered from; it was mental.

I had lost all confidence in myself, let alone those around me. The experts said that I had post traumatic stress disorder, which I thought only the military or emergency personnel suffered from. On good days, I attempted to go to work, sometimes I even made it through Blackwell Tunnel only to hear, or see, something that made me jump out of my skin, and the anxiety attacks would start.

I told my wife that I was okay and going regularly but I wasn't, I could not cope with life and thought about ending it.
Somehow or other with the help from my dear wife, and professionals, I managed to survive and ever so slowly, rebuilt my self-esteem.
It took almost four years to fully recover and become what I now am, somewhere close to what I was before that day, but it was during those dark depressive days that I began to write.

My very first story, Look Both Ways, Then Look Behind, found a literary agent but not a publisher. He told me that I had a talent, raw, but nevertheless it was there. After telling me to write another story, he said that there were two choices open to me: One, wait for a traditional deal. At sixty-two, with no literary profile or experience; little hope. Two, self-publish through New Generation Publishing.
This, I'm delighted to say, I did.

The success of my story, The Desolate Garden, is down to my sheer hard work, luck, in meeting a film producer and the uncompromising stance taken by Daniel Cooke my publisher, who never 'massages my inflated ego,' as he so often puts it.

From my Amazon Profile Page.

Once arrested for attempted murder in England, Danny Kemp decided that a career in writing was for him. No different than Nicholas Sparks, Mr. Kemp's first novel The Desolate Garden was picked up in a snap, and is currently being rendered into a movie. Outside the field of "run-ins with the law, Kemp draws on decades of experience, encompassing the Metropolitan Police, the tenancy of three English Public Houses, and the Licensed Taxi Trade in London, as well as being a radio voice-over artist in several radio plays, where he honed his sense of story and pacing.

(I was not found guilty…LOL)

Filming is due to begin this year with a set being built in the Unites Arab Emirates, and then locational work here in London. The budget for this project is $30,000,000’s. The production company is English, based in London.

I met with a couple of personal trainers from local gyms: asking about their qualifications, about their rates, and about their typical schedules. I made it clear I was intending to use their lessons for more than point fighting in their dojo's. They offered valuable insights and recommendations to improve my workouts, and what they would recommend for a newbie just starting.
Working through my several pages of notes, I came to several conclusions that would better our current training regimes. I went back equipped with a few ideas for my own training as well as Luke’s. According to two of the trainer’s I was over-training, which would explain that wall I couldn’t seem to get past. I was charged, excited, and anxious to get started on this new venture. I tried to focus, waging a mental battle during class, Luke’s close proximity was playing havoc with my mind as I kept returning to my memory of his backside as he walked to his locker from our first session.
Shaking my head to clear the fog I realize I was leaning into him, our sides touching from hip to shoulder as he shared statistical date that he’d found. I blushed, realizing what I’d done as I glanced to the third member of our little group. She hadn’t seemed to notice as she was staring intently into Luke’s eyes.
She stopped him in mid sentence, placing her hand on top of his. “Um, could you back up and go over that again? I didn't’ catch that last part.”
Right! I wanted to scratch her eyes out. Which made no sense, I had no claims to Luke. I tried to focus as I waged this mental battle with myself during the remainder of the class. Meanwhile, Luke maintained the contact as I sat, nodding in agreement as he went over the numbers slowly for Cheryl, the soon to be eyeless freak that sat across from me.
Once class was finally over I closed my notebook deciding that in payment for todays training perhaps I could get him to go over the notes with me. I hadn’t written but four words. I bent to grab my backpack and we bumped heads.
“OW” we both said simultaneously. Then laughed together as he reached for both of our bags.
“Ready for your first real workout?” I asked him eagerly.
“What? Really? What was that you put me through last Friday?” He opened the door for me as he slung his pack over his shoulder.
“That was an evaluation.” I grin. “Had to see what I’m working with.”
“Ugh.” He gave me a mock sign of disgust. “I’ll have you know I was sore all weekend thanks to you.”
“Why? I didn’t even push you that hard.” Our hands brushed as we walked. I wondered if he thought of holding my hand as I wished he’d take mine.
He chuckled. “ So, Roxanne. Have you decided on a price to charge me for your torture?”
“I have.” I was almost giddy. I couldn’t wait to share my plan. I just had to be careful that I didn’t gush on him. “I think you’re right, cardio every day might be a bit much for you to start with.”
He rolled his eyes. “I can’t believe I am going to pay you for that kind of torture.” He reached the door and pulled it open. “After you Domina Roxanne.”
“Oh you’re going to pay for that!” I say as I pass him. “I got some great ides to help us achieve maximum results to be ready for the first match in October. It’s on!” I stride ahead and enter the locker room. As I pushed the door I caught him staring at my ass. I couldn’t help but blush and smile.
He was checking me out. My energy level was instantly off the chart. I quickly changed and headed to the cardio area picking up a jump rope.I was five minutes in when he came out of the locker room. I motioned to him to pick up a rope.
“OK. Let’s talk rates.” I talked as I jumped. “Two days a week would be seventy five, 3 days a hundred. However, if you agree to be a training partner as well I can reduce the rates to seventy five for three days. If you promise two things.”
“Yh, ok I’m listening.” He started in at the same tempo I was going.
“First, you give me 100% effort. Second, can you go over the notes from todays class with me? I was so excited to get started on our new plans I couldn’t concentrate.” I grin sheepishly.
He chuckled. “ And here I thought maybe you might like me or something, hoping that touching your leg and hand might win me a kiss or two while you’re excited about how to torture me. Sure, Roxanne. I’ll gladly go over the notes with you if you are willing to come by my placer after we get done here.”
I nod, trying to act cool while I’m bouncing inside. Did he just say? Hoping I like him? He wants to kiss me? “Sure, I suppose I can do that.”
We followed the workout I had prepared. I know we did it, but it was a blur by the time I was in the shower scrubbing. Even though he had just been in close proximity of me sweating, I wanted to be extra clean in case, well just in case, hoping that he’d still want to kiss me.
When I came out of the building he was leaning against a black Camero. “Domina Roxanne, your chariot awaits.” He walked around to the passengers side and opened the door, then cursed as fast food debris and notebooks spilled out onto the pavement. “Ern, well give me a second.”
“I couldn’t help but giggle.
Scooping up the trash, he jogged the short distance to the barrel. “Sorry about that. Now, your chariot is ready.”
I slipped into the seat. “Sweet ride.”
As I buckled in, he leaned over. “How about some dinner first? I’m starved after that workout?”
“Sure. So am I!”
He leaned the remaining four inches cupping my chin in his hand, his lips brushing over mine gently before kissing deeper as he turned the ignition on, revving the engine.

Bold New Moves

What happens when you start as friends? It's said that if you're friends first you'll be lovers for a lifetime.  Do you remember those initial flutter? That churning in your gut feeling, afraid the other person just isn't into you the same way?

Bold New Moves
 by
Ben Hannigan
I can’t do this.  I’m terrified, worried sick, my lungs are on fire, I can barely breathe. I watch as my hands shake and tremor, barely able to light my cigarette, the flickering flame blurring and sputtering into the wind. I keep swearing and my roll-up flutters to the floor and I almost fall scrabbling for it. The concrete cool against my skin contrasting against the blinding white pain flaring through my body as I crack my head on the table.

I hear an amused chuckle and I catch in the reflection on the steel table a look that makes my stomach do backflips, a smile so blinding it radiates through me. “BOLLOCKS” my mind screams as I realize my crush is, as always early. She smiles and flicks open a lighter she carries because I, her best friend smoke and effortlessly lights my dogeared scrag end scrounged from the floor.  For me as she orders my favorite drink from memory. I take a slow drag and start to calm though my heart is pounding, throbbing, the noise of my body echoing through my chest, over the buzzing of the air-con, over the crap bar music, even almost managing to cover up her voice.  She’s gorgeous!

I tear open the bag of crisps for us to pick at and blush, purring inwardly at each fleeting touch. We are talking about everything and nothing. I barely remember anything and yet… Yet I know her as she knows me; hopes, dreams, fears music taste, clothes and everything that makes us, well us.

And yet, she doesn’t know, she can’t know what my body and mind screams, what I desire and lust for, what I need and desire, what I am begging for each night in my single bed alone.

I mumble and blush and she asks me to speak up.  It takes me about half an hour or so it seems, the sweat pooling in my shirt as I finally get the courage to potentially destroy my relationship with my best friend. She pauses coughing in shock her eyes wide, as her heart pounds and I can see into her eyes she isn’t interested, I’m sure. I stutter blushing, grovelling my apologies. “I guess I better go.” I stand to leave pushing my chair into the table and turning away biting my lip to hold the tears a little, I move to walk away and I start heading to the door.

I’m outside swearing inside my head that I’ve blown it, starting the bike with a kick-start. Because I can vent my anger the bastard thing starts after three kicks, the engine roaring up into life, muffling my anger in smoke and sound.

As I swing my leg over the bike I hear the pannier unbuckling and I turn my head to see her slipping the helmet I bought for her use on.  She’s in her leather jacket and has her gloves on as normal. I heard the crackle of the intercom as the bike dropped slightly, her body pressed into mine. “Take me home, to our bed. Please, please tell me this is real. I couldn’t bear it if you were joking.”

My heart leaps, pounding as I opened the throttle and grinned. “My bunny.  Let’s go home.” I didn’t need the headset to hear the whoop of joy at my answer before she giggled as the bike powered through the tunnel, the front wheel flicked up with a dab of the clutch,  hearing that giggle that stopped my heart every time and feeling the familiar squeezing of her sliding her hand round my waist. I blushed, losing myself into joy and love as her hand slipped far lower than it ever had before, promising so much more than before, my world becoming so much more; more intense, more beautiful.
