Sultry Summer Chapter 3 by Cathy Brockman

Sultry Summer
By Cathy Brockman
Chapter 3
What are friends for

Friday night Summer picked up Bonita for their girls’ night out. Bonita felt a little awkward after their kiss in the fitting room on Monday, but they talked every night since and Summer never brought up that moment, so neither did Bonita. Bonita couldn’t help but wonder exactly what Summer meant when she asked her to move in. Was it as friends and roommates only or was there more? She decided tonight she would find out exactly what Summer had on her mind, though she was pretty sure of her decision already. Even if Summer only wanted a platonic friendship as they had had since moving into the same neighborhood over 15 years ago, that was fine with her.

Summer rang the doorbell with butterflies in her stomach. She wondered what Bonita was thinking about tonight. All week long Summer had thought about that kiss in the fitting room but hadn’t said anything to Bonita. Was tonight a girls’ night out as usual or was it their first date? Did she really want it to be a date? As Bonita opened the door and Summer saw her friend all dressed up in the new denim dress she had bought for her, heat spread through Summer down to her core, causing her panties to dampen.
“You look so damn good in that dress, so many men will be hitting on you that you won’t have time for me tonight,” Summer said with a hint of wistfulness in her voice.
“I don’t know about that, they will all be on you like flies on honey, as usual.” Bonita smiled as she picked up her phone and called a cab. They started doing this when they first began going to the bars after Bonita’s husbands friends got killed driving home drunk. Bonita had made Summer promise to never drive or ride home with a man after they had been drinking. Now calling the cab was as routine as brushing their teeth.
As they approached their favorite table, Summer grabbed the chair Bonita usually sat in and slid it next to the one she sat in. Bonita looked at her in question.
“So we can both see the dance-floor better,” Summer answered the unasked question as if she could read her friends mind.
The heat of Summer’s legs barely brushing against hers and the soft flowery scent of Summer’s cologne stirred up feelings inside Bonita that confused her. She couldn’t help but wonder why after all these years she was feeling desire for her best friend. This had never happened between them before.
“Have you thought anymore about moving in with me?” Summer asked, nervously toying with her napkin.
“Actually it is all I have thought about all week. I just don’t know how it will work though. You have your life and date quite a bit. I’m not even divorced yet and a basket case. I don’t want to be a burden to you.”
“Nita, honey, you could never be a burden. My house is plenty big enough for us both. I was thinking I could swap Misty’s room upstairs to the guest room downstairs and give you more privacy. There is an adjoining room to that one you could use also like a little living room of your own too.”
“You don’t have to go to all that trouble and I don’t want to put Misty out.”
“It’s no trouble and Misty has practically converted her playhouse out back into a mini apartment. I was thinking about having it finished out for her, so when she comes home for visits from college she will have her own place. You know, more privacy for when she starts wanting to bring home guys. I try to be open and let her live her life and it brings us closer, but I really don’t want to hear; well you know what I mean.”
Bonita almost choked on her drink at Summer’s remark.
“Damn Summer, you know how to freak a girl out don’t you. I have enough on my plate and now you have to throw up that our girls are growing up. I haven’t even given that thought. And that brings up another good point. What about Allie? I know she will be living on campus and spending time with her Dad part-time, but my not getting to keep the house puts her without a home too.”
Summer dropped her hand to Bonita’s knee rubbing softly, soothing her.
“Nita, Allie will have a home at my place too. It will be OUR home. Her and Misty can share the guest room downstairs until I get the playhouse converted, then she can have that room as hers, or the extra room next to yours has a sofa bed in it, she can use that. But knowing the girls, she will stay with Misty out in the new apartment more than likely. There are plenty of options.”
“Ok, that does sound doable, but that still leaves your personal life. I don’t want to cramp your style or make you feel uncomfortable about bringing men home.” Bonita stifled a moan as Summer’s hand softly kneaded her thigh.
“You know I could only bring men home when Misty was with her dad, silly. Besides, I am tired of just being a sex toy or fling for some man unfulfilled by his current lifestyle. I am ready to find something more meaningful,” She stopped and looked into Bonita’s eyes before continuing, “Misty is grown, and will be starting her own life. It’s time for me to have a life of my own again. I have to say I am looking forward to it too.” Summer removed her hand and picked up her glass slowly taking a drink.
Bonita watched her wistfully as Summer drank and toyed with her straw, remembering the feel of her soft lips, the sweet minty, chocolaty taste of her tongue and the feel of her supple body in her arms. She hesitated for a moment before whispering yes, wondering why she was feeling like this and why the thought of Wayne in Summer’s bed made her green with jealousy. Should she move in? Would they give in to this temptation between them? Would it wreck their friendship?

Sultry Summer Episode Two

Sultry Summer
by Cathy Brockman

Chapter 2

The night wore on and the girls had plenty of admirers to dance with and buy them drinks. Summer spent a lot of time with Wayne. Bonita hooked up with a geeky, but handsome, man named Bob. When the bar closed they all went to the local hotcake house and got coffee and breakfast.
Summer exchanged numbers with Wayne and Bonita exchanged with Bob. Both Summer and Bonita were very drunk and crashed soon after getting back to Summer’s place.
Monday afternoon Bonita called Summer from work, sounding like she is in tears.
“Can you meet me for lunch?” Summer asked, as she checks her appointment book to make sure what time she can leave.
“No, I don’t get off work till five, I am on my break now. I just had to call you. What do I do now?” Bonita's panicked voice worried Summer.
“How about I pick you up for dinner? Then we can go have some mall therapy, maybe even a drink if you need one. We will work this out, don’t you worry about it.”

*********
After work, Summer picked up Bonita and they go to the Silver Saddle for a burger and drink.
“I can’t believe he had the gall to serve you papers at work. I thought he was going to be civil about this.” Summer shakes her head sending her long, blonde ponytail snapping like a whip.
“I know! We talked last week and had agreed to go together to see an attorney. Evidently Little Miss Fashion-doll-wannabe, he is seeing, didn’t like that idea.” Bonita taps the table nervously.
“How about we eat, talk about something else, have a drink, then go to the mall and shop for new outfits for next weekend? Then afterward we will stop at the ice cream shop and talk about it, if you want to.” Summer reaches over and lays her hand on top of Bonita’s.
One drink turns into a couple, and both girls are feeling pretty good by the time they head to the mall.
“Ooooh! Look at this snake-skin print dress. Isn’t it to die for?” Summer’s face lights up in excitement as she holds up her latest find.
“I have to say it is you. What do you think about this?” Bonita holds up a pair of jeans and a cute fitted T.
“No. That’s the old you! Time for a new you. Here try this.” Summer hands Bonita a short, but simple, denim dress.
Bonita eyes it over skeptically.
“Oh come on. Try it on! “Summer takes Bonita by the arm and leads her to the dressing rooms.
The store isn’t crowded on a Monday evening, and they have the entire dressing room area to themselves; Summer pulls Bonita into a larger one with her.
“This way we don’t have to keep parading out into the store to see how the other one looks” Summer says, as her friend looks at her with a puzzled look on her face.
“Good idea. I hate going in and out of the dressing rooms when I am trying stuff on.” Bonita says as she tosses her hand bag on the bench by Summer’s.
“Damn you’re so hot!” Bonita blushes as she realizes she said this out loud.
“Do you really think I am hot?” Summer looks up into Bonita’s appraising face.
“Summer how can you not possibly know everyone thinks you’re hot. Look at you! Blonde hair, blue eyes, curves in all the right places. I would kill to have your body.”
Summer stands there a few moments, in her silky white panties and matching lace bra that shoves the biggest part of her small, but firm, round breasts up and out to be admired by all.
“I don’t have near the body you have Nita,” she says eyeing her friend’s fuller breasts, heat filling her eyes.
“Come on Summer. You know I am way too much over-weight. Even my doctor calls me obese.”
“I think you’re beautiful, Nita.”
The words barely escape Summer’s mouth, when Bonita pushes her back into the wall, pressing her mouth softly over her best friend’s lips. Summer lets out a small gasp but quickly responds hungrily, deepening the kiss.
“Damn! Sorry Summer. I don’t know what came over me. I think it was the alcohol. I hope you’re not mad at me.” Bonita gazes at Summer.
“Why would I be mad? I kissed you back. But we better get these clothes tried on before we get into real trouble,” Summer said in a husky voice.
“Mm you look really good in that dress Nita, you should show off your legs more. Bob will not be able to keep his hands off you Friday. Do you two have plans?” Summer’s voice held a hint of jealousy.
“No, I did tell him that you and I may be at the Saddle this weekend if you didn’t have other plans. I’m not comfortable going on an actual date yet. After all, I am still married.” Bonita unzips the dress, slips it off and puts her jeans back on.
“Well, Don didn’t waste any time, but I do understand. Let’s plan on going out again this weekend. How does this look?” She says as she turns and poses in the snake-skin dress.
“Fabulous. It’s definitely you. Don’t you and Wayne have a date for this weekend? He is one sexy hunk of man.”
“Yeah he is pretty hot and nice too. We have talked quite a bit on the phone. We are not going out until Saturday. Friday you and I can go out and celebrate your divorce. Let’s go get some shoes and make up to go with our new dresses.” Summer picks up both dresses as they head out of the dressing room.
“I don’t think I can afford this dress and shoes. I’m not sure what this darn divorce will cost since I hadn’t planned on getting a lawyer.” Bonita starts to hang the dress back on the rack.
“This is on me, you looked smoking in it. I have a friend that’s a good divorce attorney; I bet I can get him to handle your case pro-bono.” Summer winked at her friend.
“I don’t know Summer. I think it’s gonna be a fight. In the papers he served it says we should sell the house since Allie is going to college. He will pay for her dorm or apartment. I don’t even get child support. Can you believe that?”
“So the cheating ass isn’t going to pay child support?”
“No he says that Allie is 18 and not going to be living at home. That he will pay her tuition that isn’t covered in grants or scholarships and her dorm or apartment fees and give her a weekly allowance as long as she stays in school and maintains a passing grade; that we should sell the house and split it.” Bonnie wipes a tear that is trying to escape her eye.
“I hate to say this, but that doesn’t sound like a bad deal. We will let my friend look it over though before you make a decision.” Summer holds a pair of black shoes up to the dress.
“You have a pair almost like those. What about this pair.” Bonita holds up a pair of cream wedges with a thick belt-like strap around the ankles. “But where would I live? I don’t make enough to buy a house or anything like that. I only work part-time and am not sure I can get more hours or a better job at my age.”
“Perfect. I love this pair!” She turns to her friend putting both hands on Bonita’s face.
“Move in with me,” she whispers into her friend’s lips for another passionate kiss.

Sultry Summer Episode One

Sultry Summer
By Cathy Brockman
Episode one
Hot Bleachers and Hotter Cowboys

Even though it is almost seven in the evening, it is still sticky hot outside. The large crowd crammed into the bleachers behind the high-school seems to make it even worse.
“Why do they always do these events outside? Graduation is supposed to be special. They should do it in the gymnasium where they can turn on the air.” Bonita swats a mosquito then fumbles in her handbag for a tissue to wipe away the blood and bug remains.
“The gymnasium is too small for this crowd, Nita, besides your only child only graduates once. Well from high-school anyways.” Summer, smiling sweetly, looks over at her friend.
The chatter of the crowd dies down as the ceremony finally begins. The women sit quietly wiping tears and sweat, along with the occasional squished mosquito, waiting to see their daughters receive their diplomas.
After the commencement they wait by the gates for the girls to bring their belongings before heading out to the after graduation party.
“I see Don made it. What does Allie think about him bringing his uh…, friend.” Summer eyes her friend cautiously.
Bonita and Don have only been separated a few months and Summer thought it in poor taste he would bring the other woman to the graduation ceremony, after all she hasn’t officially been introduced to Allie yet.
“Allie seems pretty disinterested. She has party on the brain right now.” Bonita forces a smile.
“We both have an empty house tonight, wanna go have a drink? Celebrate our newfound freedom.” Summer winces at the poor choice of words but Bonita doesn’t seem to mind.
“Sure, I would love to! Should we go home and change first?”
Summer nods as the girls come bustling out in a big pack of teenage excitement. They hug everyone, passing off their bags and assure their moms they will be good and not be out driving.
“Meet me at my house in half an hour. Bring an overnight bag and we will call a cab! We are overdue for a girls’ night out and tonight we don’t have to worry about the kids!” Summer grins as she tugs Bonita towards the parking lot, dodging the crowd.
****

Summer slips on a cute little denim jumper and a pair of two inch heels with lots of straps, since it’s way too hot for boots. She knows Bonita will be more comfortable at the Silver Saddle than Starlight and its closer. The doorbell rings as she is finishing up the final touch-ups to her makeup.
“Wow! Nita! You look hot!!!” Summer eyes her friend’s tight fitting Capris and low cut t-shirt that reveals lots of cleavage.
“Not near as hot as you! I should have known you would dress up, even going to the Saddle!”
“I’m not dressed up!” Summer winks at her friend as she grabs her cell-phone to call the cab. “Wanna glass of wine while we wait?”
The women walk into the bar eyeing the crowd.
“Nice crowd tonight! Wanna table or sit at the bar?” Summer’s green eyes sparkle in delight as she grabs Bonita and leads her to a table positioned close to the dance-floor but out of the way enough so they don’t get trampled every time the music changes.
“Looks like our favorite table is empty! It’s already pretty crowded and early yet! I guess we aren’t the only parents out celebrating our empty nests!” Summer says as she looks around excitedly.
“Dang Summer you act like you haven’t been out before! When was the last time? Last weekend?”
“For your information, it’s been a few weeks! We have been tied up with graduation, parties, prom shopping, college tours, all that good stuff, remember?” Summer’s eyes widen and she licks her lips as a tall man in his early thirties sporting a very tight pair of Levis and a black Stetson saunters by checking them both out. He smiles when he sees Summer’s reaction to him and faces them propping one leg on the bar rail as he leans back displaying his trim body like a trophy.
“What can I getcha gals?” The waitress asks, looking worn out or bored already.
“Coors light draft for me. Summer, I’ll get this round.”
“I’ll take a Jack and Diet Coke with a slice of lemon and the tall dark cowboy at the bar!”
“Yeah! You and every single woman in here; and a few men.” The waitress chuckles as she heads to the bar. She leans over saying something to the cowboy and he grins broadly looking back at Summer.
Shortly the waitress returns with their drinks. Bonita lays a twenty on the table.
“Tall, dark and sexy bought this round. Says ya both owe him a dance. He even tipped me extra! Don’t do anything I wouldn’t do!” She winks as she flits off to the next table.
“Summer you’re a mess! I can’t believe you did that!”
“Moi? I didn't do anything. I really didn’t think the waitress was gonna tell him what I said! But hey, we got a free drink. Saves us a bit of cash, we can stay longer!” She takes a lick of lemon and a sip of the drink, running her tongue over the rim of the glass.
“I’ve never wished I was a glass before, but what I wouldn’t give to be that one.” The cowboy puts his hand lightly on Summer’s shoulder making her jump. Bonita chuckles.
“Hi, I’m Wayne Evans.” He tips his hat and extends his hand to each lady.
“I’m Bonita Martin, my friends call me Bonnie. The lemon licker over there is Summer Ramsey.” Bonita shakes Wayne's hand and nods towards Summer.
“Nice to meet ya ladies.” Wayne looks both women over in approval.
A fast song starts up and he grabs Bonnie's hand. “I believe you owe me dance. I’m claiming the lemon licker for the first slow one.” He winks seductively at Summer as he pulls Bonita to the floor.

After a couple dances, Wayne goes to order them all another round; the girls excuse themselves to the ladies room.
“So what ya think about Wayne?” Summer asks as she reapplies some lip-gloss.
“He’s hot, but I hope he has a friend to call while we are in here.” Bonita puts on a fresh coat of clear gloss after washing her hands.
“Oh well! If not we will just share him! Looks like there’s enough of him for us both!” Summer smiles mischievously as they head back out to their table.
